DIFFERENT AGES EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT PEER PRESSURE
Peer pressure is often mentioned as a burden on Generation Z. However, comparison, desire to integrate and self-esteem always exist and govern human's mind. Therefore, this phenomenon also appears in other generations.
- Adolescence (ages 13-19)
Adolescence is a period of heightened social awareness and identity formation, making individuals more susceptible to peer pressure. Adolescents may experience pressure to engage in risky behaviors, such as substance abuse, unsafe sexual activity, or delinquent acts. This pressure can stem from a desire to be perceived as cool, rebellious, or accepted by a particular social group. Moreover, in terms of academic results, achievements, appearance, relationship and family circumstances, they can easily experience self-doubtful, self-conscious, the feeling of being left behind or unconsciously denying their own achievements due to the comparison caused by themselves.
- Young Adulthood (ages 20-40)
Peer pressure in middle adulthood may focus on career advancement, family dynamics, and personal achievements. Individuals may feel pressure to excel in their careers, maintain a perfect family life, or achieve certain milestones to maintain social status or impress their peers. This pressure can lead to stress, burnout, and unrealistic expectations.
